Sugar and Spice Candied Nuts

Obviously, this isn’t from the grains cookbook, but if you try these nuts, I don’t think you’ll mind the diversion. In fact, you might just get down on your knees and thank me. What can I say? I simply can’t stop baking sweet things (or eating, them, either)!

If I ever get motivated to hand out little Christmas presents to friends, these nuts will have a starring role. I found this recipe on smittenkitchen.com, one of my favorite food blogs about a month ago. I immediately earmarked it, went out and bought a bunch of almonds, and then proceeded to let the almonds languish in the cupboard for a month.

Sigh! If I had only known how good these were going to be. They are sweet, salty, cinnamony and just a bit spicy. They are dead easy to make and even easier to eat. They are good as is, but I’ve already got some changes in mind. I would have liked more of the salty, so I’ll increase the kosher salt to 2 teaspoons. Neither Bryan nor I could really taste the cayenne pepper. This time, I used 1/8 teaspoon. Next time, I’ll go up to 1/4 teaspoon. I’m also curious to try different spices. But first, I think I need to go eat some more of these.

  1. Thanks Ma Sulley. That’s just the boost I need to go to the grocery store. Maybe these will make a nice Valentine’s treat! (DId you know if you eat a treat given as a gift, the calories don’t count? Yeah, it’s a rule.)

  2. Oh Linda, they are not hot at all. If Trista hadn’t said that they had pepper in them I wouldn’t have even known. They are so very good. But like I said, it is almost impossible to eat just a few at a time. Hide them from yourself or they will be gone quickly. LOL

  3. These sound so good. I love salty/sweet combo but not too sure about the cayenne pepper. I’m a wimp when it comes to hot. I don’t know your heat tolerance so I can’t judge these. I have a brother that loves hot… if he makes you wings, ask someone who has had a few which are the hot ones and which are mild. He’ll lie to you every time. hmmm… Maybe that’s what makes me timid of other’s ideas of spicy or not.

I’m going to have to try the recipe. If it’s too hot, I’ll just give them away and make some more for me!

  4. These are so good, Bryan brought some over for the Super Bowl and I absolutely loved them. They are the kind of thing that you think, Oh I will have a few and end up eating the whole bag, and I did. They have a combination of sweet and sour and spicey that is perfect. Just have to learn to take a few at a time, which didn’t happen the first time I ate them. Very Very good.
